Hairy Story

Lately, I have been paying attention to hair, all types of human hair. Yesterday, while I was waiting to see the dermatologist, I couldn’t avoid noticing a dark hair pointing to the horizon, coming out of the mole on the lady sitting next to me. I reacted immediately by closing my eyes, and prayed to God that I never get a wire like that emerging from my chin. But suddenly, I remembered a mole on my neck, which with a discrete movement of my fingers, I barely touched, just to make sure that nothing was coming out of it. Just in case. Why my prayers? Why my concern? I will turn 50 soon. And I have heard that at 50, hair starts moving to different places, gets misplaced, and invades the body’s most visible areas. Just thinking about this phenomenon gives me the creeps.

After leaving the doctor’s office, I ran to the pharmacy to fill my prescription. And guess what happened? I found another hairy female, with such bushy eyebrows that, like a magnet grabbed my attention. On the spot I made a decision. I turned back and looked for the lotion aisle. It took me approximately two minutes to find a cute pink box advertising the latest tool to get rid of unwanted hair. It was a little box with two small sponges that looked like nail files or, more precisely, they resembled sand paper. I overlooked this detail, because according to the instructions this gadget was a very effective hair remover. Let’s put it this way, the value proposition of the product in combination with the concern about my possible hairy situation took care of all purchasing decisions. So I bought the packet. I convinced myself that it was exactly what I needed for my hairy anxiety attack.

The instructions recommended cleaning the shaving area with warm water and soap before starting the process. But, when I got home my urgency, already “in crescendo”, took over.  Just after finding two potential victims on my chin, two dark hairs, I decided not to wait. I washed my face, dried the invaded area by those two black-pointed intruders and started filing, yes, filing. The excitement of seeing one or two hairs dropping from my chin made me overlook the action that was taking place on my skin. I continued sanding up and down, until my chin turned red making the two black wires more visible. I kept on going, until nothing was left, but a rounded coat of red skin under my lips.  Then, I did what my husband does every morning after shaving, I splashed some lotion on the affected area.

I was feeling proud of my accomplishment, until I paid attention to the 3M logo on the sponges, sorry, sand paper. Yes, I realized I bought two sheets of sand paper. I actually pictured myself in a hardware store, instead of a pharmacy, buying sandpaper for my beard. How in the world was I going to reconcile those little files beautifully assembled on a pink base, inside a little pink box, showing a smiling young lady in her twenties, with two gray 3M sheets, exactly like the ones they sell for home repairs?

I checked my face with a magnifying glass, and there were no traces of unwanted hair. My chin, to the touch, felt like my six year-old niece’s cheeks, soft and smooth.  Well, a little bit itchy. When I splashed the rosewater after shaving, I felt a burning sensation. Gradually, my chin started to resemble Popeye’s chin. I couldn’t even apply on more drop of lotion or any more make up to cover the new addition to my face. I opted to accentuate my eyes and my lips with more color, in an effort to distract the attention from my chin. It didn’t work, what I got was a new character out of my face, Popeye’s sister.

Finally, in desperation, I went back to the little pink box for answers, and saw again the smiley face of the model showing her non-hairy look. And there was the fine print that specified “warning: apply first on your arm to see if there is any allergic reaction.”  Thank you box, it is too late. They don’t get it. Most likely I will not read the instructions, and for sure I will not even pay attention to any warnings coming in fine print. Second, I am almost fifty, I need reading glasses for everything, and for that fine print I need bionic eyes. Third, I had a post-traumatic shock that morning, and under its spell I decided to fight all the unwanted hair of the world by buying the first item that will promise me a victory.

And there I was again, despising the girl on the box, and yes I was a little bit jealous, certain that she had all her hair in the right places. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes and visualized myself in my twenties. I was twenty once, with more hair on my head, and none on my chin. I was never thankful before for being 20, but I was this time. I was very thankful 25 years later. But, as my shrink used to say, “here and now”, so I came back to my 47s and to the creeps I get when I see hair on other ladies faces.  I learned my lesson. I really have to respect other people’s hair. The only thing I need to take care of is to carry a magnifying glass with me all the time, and read the instructions first. Because I foresee that the war against unwanted hair has just begun.

Una Historia de Pelos

Ultimamente he estado poniendo atención al pelo, en todas sus formas humanas. Ayer, esperando ver al dermatólogo, no pude evitar un pelo negro, apuntando al horizonte, que salía del lunar de mi vecina de asiento. Cerré los ojos y empecé a pedirle a Diosito, que no me diera un pelo de esos. Y me acordé de un lunar que tengo en el cuello, el cual muy discretamente toqué con los dedos, por si acaso. ¿Porqué mi petición? ¿Porqué mi preocupación? Porque casi tengo 50 años y, por lo que dicen, a esta edad, los pelos empiezan a cambiar de lugar, a desacomodarse, a invadir las zonas visibles del cuerpo. El tan sólo pensarlo me da escalofríos.

Saliendo del médico, me fui a a la farmacia a surtir la receta. ¡Y adivinen qué! Me encontré a otra peluda, con una ceja con el poder de un imán, porque atraía todas las miradas. Fue en ese momento que decidí hacer algo urgente. En el pasillo de cremas depiladoras me encontré una cajita con lo que parecían dos esponjas que, según las indicaciones, eran potentes removedoras de pelo, vello y cualquier alambre saliente del cuerpo humano. Justo lo que necesitaba en ese momento de ansiedad peluda.

Las instrucciones decían que es mejor preparar la piel antes de iniciar la operación removedora de vello. Pero llegando a la casa, ante mi urgencia de pelarme, y después de haber hurgado y encontrado dos vellos potenciales, en mi barbilla, decidí no esperar a la siguiente mañana, después del baño. Me lavé la cara con sigilo, sequé el área invadida por esos dos intrusos negros y empecé a lijar. ¡Sí!, me oyeron bien, a lijar. Primero no noté el impacto, con la emoción de ver sobre el lavamanos uno que otro vello caer. Pero los dos objetos de mi lucha, ahí estaban, apuntando orgullosos hacia el horizonte, igualitos que el pelo del lunar de la mujer. Así que lijé y lijé.

Lijé, porque en la premura de la urgencia, aún cuando ví dos lijas 3M, grises, al abrir la cajita; no quize relacionar esas dos hojas “rasposas” con las lijas que venden en la ferretería. ¿Cómo pues?, si vienen en un estuche rosa, en una caja rosa, con una mona sonriente en la caja. Continúe lijando y, por fin, después de dominar la técnica, los indomables vellos cayeron al lavamanos. Orgullosa, me froté con agua de rosas la cara y creo que hasta me di palmaditas en las mejillas, como le hace mi marido.

Revisé la zona con un espejo de aumento, el resultado era el deseado. Mi barbilla, al tocarla, se sentía como las mejillas de mi sobrina, lisa y suave. Pero con un poquito de ardor. Cuando intenté ponerme crema, sentí que el ardorcito iba en aumento, como si me quemara la piel. Me froté con agua. Después de unos minutos, me empezó a salir un salpullido rosáceo, y la barbilla empezó a tomar la forma de la barbilla de Popeye. No pude colocar la crema otra vez, ni siquiera poner maquillaje para disimular la protuberancia, que parecía una pelota rosa debajo de la boca. Opté por destacar los ojos con sombra y delineador para ahuyentar la atención de la barbilla, pero lo que logré fue una caricatura de Lupita, en vivo y a todo color.

Ahorita, estoy viendo la foto sonriente de la modelo de la caja, y descubriendo que en letra chiquita, en las instrucciones, dice “aplicar primero en la zona del brazo para observar si hay alguna reacción alérgica”. Gracias, pero muy tarde. Que no entienden que, primero, nunca léo las instrucciones, mucho menos las contraindicaciones y, segundo, que soy una casi cincuentona, que tuvo esta mañana un choque traumático y que en trance postraumático se lanzó a salvar su juventud, peleando los pelos del mundo.

No, claro que nadie lo entiende. Para empezar, la mona de la caja, no pasa de los 20 años, lo cual significa, que ella todavía tiene los pelos bien acomodados. Pero bueno, mis veinte ya pasaron. Estoy en el aquí y en el ahora, haciéndole frente a los escalofríos que me dan los pelos en las caras de otras. Son sus pelos y los debo respetar. De lo único que me debo preocupar es de mis pelos y de, por primera vez, leer las instrucciones.

Preface

The reward of the story-teller who has successfully met the child’s story interest is the plea embodied in the title of this book: “Tell me another story.” The book meets this child longing on a psychologic basis. It consists of groups of stories arranged so that their telling will result in definite mental growth for children, as well as satisfied story hunger.

There has been a tendency in the past to group stories in a haphazard way; there has been no organized plan of selecting stories to precede and follow one another for the purpose of definite functioning of mind processes. The effect of one story of distinctly differentiated theme from one which has just been told is to break continuity of thought. On the other hand, stories of similar theme, but contrasting form told in the story-hour have a mental effect of concentration and will training. This mental growth through stories is the aim of the book.

The instinctive and universal interests of all children form the themes of the story programs; and these interests are presented in their natural order for a year, beginning with home life, taking the child out into the world, and carrying him through his school, industrial, seasonable, and holiday activities. Three stories have been grouped in each program as the number upon which children can most easily fix their attention.

The plan of grouping the stories in each program is very definite and psychologic. The first story in a group is an apperceptive one; it secures the child’s spontaneous attention because, through its plot, it touches his own life in some way. It brings him into close and intimate touch with the interest theme of the program because it speaks of things that he knows, and other things that he can do. The second story in each group makes an appeal to the child’s reasoning powers; having secured his attention through the apperceptive story, the story-teller now takes the child a-field, mentally, and secures his voluntary attention. It calls for constructive thought; it presents the theme of the program in a broader way, with wider application. It is, usually, the longest story of the program.

The third story is, invariably, the dessert of this story meal. Through its brevity, humor, tenderness, or sharply contrasting treatment of the program theme, it supplies the necessary relaxation, the fitting climax for the program. 

An analysis of the Trade Life program will illustrate the psychologic appeal upon which the book is built. The story, The Holiday, opens the program with its apperceptive appeal, showing the dependence of the home upon the industrial life of the community and the possibility of a child’s cooperation in it. The second story in the trade program, Selma Lagerloöf’s Nils and the Bear, gives this wonderful Swedish writer’s presentation of the iron industry as a factor in our growth from savagery to civilization. The third story, The Giant Energy and Fairy Skill, by Maud Lindsay, gives the program its climax in
fantasy and contrast.

A similar analysis may be made of each program in the book.

It is not intended that the stories shall never be told to children separately; on the contrary, each story is one of the best examples to be found of the child interest which forms its theme. The book has been prepared, however, to meet in an educational way the need expressed in its title. It should be of value for the home, school, library, and settlement.

Cuéntame otra Historia

La satisfacción del cuenta cuentos al lograr captar el interés del niño en la historia, es lo que inspira el título de este libro: Cuéntame otra Historia. Esta publicación logra que el niño quiera escuchar la historia, desde un plano psicológico. El libro consiste en una agrupación de historias ordenadas en tal forma que su lectura resultará en el desarrollo mental del niño, así como en la satisfacción de su deseo por conocer la historia.

En el pasado, ha existido la tendencia de agrupar las historias en forma caótica; no habiendo un plan de secuencia de una historia a otra que tenga el propósito de lograr un funcionamiento determinado del proceso mental. El resultado, después de contar una historia de un tema diferente al de una historia anterior, es la interrupción del hilo conductor del pensamiento. Por otra parte, las historias de temas similares, con estilos contrastantes, contadas durante la hora de lectura, logran la concentración y entrenamiento mental. El desarrollo mental, a través de contar historias, es el propósito de este libro.

Los intereses intuitivos y universales de los niños conforman los temas de las historias de este libro. Estas actividades de interés son presentadas en el orden natural en que suceden durante el año, iniciando con la vida en el hogar, la salida del niño al mundo, su paso por la escuela, el trabajo, las actividades por estación y la celebración de días festivos. Se agruparon tres historias en cada capítulo, ya que es la cantidad de historias que los niños pueden escuchar con atención.

El propósito de agrupar las historias por capítulo es psicológico y obedece a una lógica definida. La primera historia de cada capítulo es familiar para el niño, garantiza su atención espontánea porque la trama toca en alguna forma la vida del niño; la historia acerca al niño íntimamente al tema del capítulo porque le habla de lo que él o ella conoce y de lo que puede hacer. La segunda historia en el capítulo despierta su capacidad de razonamiento; teniendo asegurada su atención en la historia familiar, el cuenta cuentos ahora lleva al niño a un ambiente fuera de lo conocido, captando la atención voluntaria del niño. Estimula el pensamiento constructivo, presentando el tema del capítulo en una forma más amplia, con mayores posibilidades. Por lo regular, ésta es la historia más extensa del capítulo.

La tercera historia es, invariablemente, el postre de este festín de la lectura. Con su brevedad, humor, ternura y repentino cambio de tono, ofrece la relajación necesaria, el clímax perfecto. El análisis del Capítulo Trade Life ilustra la inspiración psicológica que motivó la creación de este libro. La historia The Holiday (El Día de Fiesta), abre el capítulo con su encanto familiar, mostrando la dependencia de la vida del hogar a la vida industrial (de trabajo) de la comunidad, y de la posibilidad que el niño tiene de participar en ésta. La segunda historia es Nils and the Bear (El Maravilloso Viaje de Nils Holgerson a Través de Suecia) de Selma Lagerlof. Esta maravillosa escritora sueca presenta la industria del hierro como un factor de desarrollo del mundo salvaje al mundo civilizado. Un análisis similar se puede hacer de cada capítulo del libro.

No se pretende que estas historias sólo se cuenten juntas, por lo contrario, cada historia es uno de los mejores ejemplos encontrados de interés para el niño. How to convince someone seeking for a new career path, to prepare him or her to become a banquet server, by reading an e-book?
By creating the story of the future banquet server.

These are the main points of the marketing story:

Before creating the mix or marketing story, we start by describing the storylines of the seller and buyer.

The seller’s story:
The seller is a former banquet server and banquet server trainer, who trained new banquet servers for the hospitality industry. As a trainer, she learned how trainees learn, how they expect to be trained and how they communicate with their trainer. As a Spanish communication specialist, the seller knows how to plan, organize and write a book targeting the Spanish speaking audience that want to improve their income. As a professional translator, the seller can research English material to adapt it into a professional Spanish translation, as well as teach the field terminology in Spanish with its English translation. On the seller’s side, time is opportunity. Start selling the e-book by September is a priority, due to the beginning of the high season in the special events industry.

The Buyer’s story:
The potential buyer is primarily a Spanish speaker who lives in the United States and earns minimum wage. He or she feels trapped in a fixed income, and considers tips and gratuities the main advantages for becoming a banquet server. This buyer has an idea of the hard work that involves being a banquet server, and is confidence that speaks the needed English to communicate with clients. Most likely, the story of this buyer will continue within the hospitality industry or food industry. Later he or she can become banquet’s supervisor, captain or bartender. This buyer sees that becoming a banquet server is an improvement on her or his career, and an excellent opportunity to grow in the future. Especially for the ones that dream with starting their own restaurant.

The Storytelling Process:
The main objective of storytelling in marketing is to engage the audience with words targeted only for them. The words used have a meaning to the audience. That meaning has an emotional load. In our case, the e-book uses storytelling techniques. It has a story format, that carefully leads the reader to a climax, and then to a positive ending. The marketing material also uses this process.

The story:
The marketing material and e-book have tangible and emotional appeals. The buyer will be able, in two weeks, to work as a banquet server if follows the e-book instructions, and will have the information and the basic skills to do the job. In addition, he or she will accomplish a goal, a goal that will bring money and opportunities. He or she will be embarking in a new career path that will bring more money and opportunities as well. A journey just started.

The marketing material:
In a conversational style the writer shares with the audience part of her experience as banquet server, until she was offered a supervisor position. There were included three main points: the money, the English limitations, and the growing opportunities of the industry. With clear examples, the writer explains these main points by sharing real life situations she experienced, and offers solutions.

MARKETING STORY (SPANISH)

Era un evento de los grandes, para más de mil personas. Terminamos hasta las 2 de la mañana. Pero no importa, con este cheque parece que hubiera trabajado una semana extra, sólo por las propinas.

Mis cheques venían con casi 300 dólares más cuando trabajaba un evento de más de mil personas. $600.00 en una sóla semana no caían nada mal.

LAS PROPINAS
Como banquet server puedes ganar hasta 15 dólares por hora.

Si actualmente ganas 8 o 9 dólares la hora, como banquet server, posiblemente vas a ganar lo mismo, más 5 o 6 dólares por hora, en propinas. Las propinas son las que hacen la diferencia en esta profesión.

En banquetes el dinero está en las propinas. Por lo cual, conforme adquieras más experiencia, también aprenderás a buscar trabajo en los hoteles y casinos donde paguen mejor propina.

EL INGLES
“Sí, pero no sé inglés bien”. Claro que sabes el inglés suficiente para ser banquet server. Te lo digo yo, que me inicié como banquet server sin saber mucho inglés. La mayoría de los banquet servers hablan español y muchos, como yo, se iniciaron en este campo sin dominar el inglés. Y, adivina, en el 90 por ciento de los casos, los supervisores hablan español.

DE BANQUET SERVER A SUPERVISOR
Si te esmeras, no faltas a tus eventos, llegas a tiempo y tus clientes y supervisores tienen una buena opinión de tu trabajo, muy bien puedes convertirte en supervisor o capitán de banquetes. A mi me ofrecieron ser entrenadora de banquetes un año después de que me contrataron como banquet server, sin experiencia previa. Yo empecé como banquet server sin tener idea de lo que era el trabajo.

Un supervisor de banquetes gana de 16 a 22 dólares la hora, de acuerdo a la temporada.

Ya sé, te preocupa el inglés de nuevo. Bueno, te voy a dar una solución en el libro. Pero ahorita, te digo que los banquetes son más técnicos que nada, no requieren de mucho hablar. La mayoría de tus banquet servers hablarán español. Y es muy posible que tu manager también hable español.

¿MÁS DINERO Y MENOS DINERO, PORQUE?
Ser banquet server no es trabajar de 9 a 5, por un sueldo fijo. Un banquet server puede trabajar en varios empleos, porque la mayoría de los hoteles ofrecen medios tiempos. Pero esos medios tiempos no son fijos, se acomodan de acuerdo a los eventos de la semana. Si tu trabajas en dos o tres hoteles, vas a poder acomodar tu horario en base a los eventos de esos dos o tres lugares. Y, recuerda, los eventos más grandes son los que dejan más dinero.

¿Te imaginas tener la capacidad de tomarte unos días libres durante la temporada baja, sin tener que estar pidiendo vacaciones? ¿ Y si trabajas muy duro y en los mejores hoteles, llevarte unos cien dólares de propina por una cena?

Pero lo mejor de todo, tendrás la oportunidad de conocer quiénes son los mejores empleadores, y estarás al tanto de quiénes están contratando tiempos completos, para que de ahí despegues tu carrera en la industria, y muy pronto te conviertas en supervisor de banquetes o capitán.

En esta carrera tienes también manera de crecer y expandir tus habilidades. En el futuro, puedes convertirte también en cocktail server, en mesera o mesero de un restaurante, o en bartender. Y todos estos puestos pagan propinas.

Si tienes un trabajo fijo ahora, y quieres hacer más dinero, como banquet server puedes hacerlo. Porque un banquet server puede trabajar también los fines de semana únicamente. Los horarios con mayor oferta de trabajo son los viernes y sábados por la noche, después de las 2 de la tarde.

La oportunidad inicia en septiembre, con el inicio de la temporada alta en banquetes. Toma esta oportunidad, prepárate con el libro de trabajo que te ofrezco, y empieza hoy a buscar trabajo. Si sigues las instrucciones del libro y practicas, en dos semanas estarás listo para que te contraten.

No dejes que la oportunidad de ganar buen dinero se te escape este año. Ahí está, a la vuelta de la esquina. Y seguramente alguien la va a tomar. Si tienes las ganas y el coraje de hacer el cambio, ve a esa entrevista de trabajo con más herramientas, con todas las herramientas que una banquet server aprendió y, después, enseñó a otros. También es posible que tu energía ahora te lleve al aroma de la primavera, y quieras capturar un jardín, entonces no dudes en vestir tus muebles y accesorios con flores y verdes. Definitivamente, utiliza flores frescas, porque dan vida y alegría inmediata a cualquier espacio.

El mensaje es claro, atrévete. Consulta revistas de decoración; visita parques, museos, galerías; observa el ocaso, el sol de la mañana, la luna. Pregúntale a tus amigas cuyo hobby sea la decoración, a diseñadores de interiores. Pero atrévete, porque es sólo en ese juego de imaginar y crear que se han logrado los mejores resultados en el arte del diseño de interiores.
